Italy 2009 – Pitigliano to Civita di Bagnoregio

// October 1st, 2009 // No Comments » // Two wheel travels

We spent two nights in Pitigliano which gave us the opportunity to explore the town then we headed for Civita di Bagnoregio. This required that we back track a bit to Latera, starting the day with a climb. At Latera we turned east and descended to Lago di Bolsena. We stopped in the town of Bolsena and had a picnic lunch of Prosciutto, local cheese, tomatoes and fruit. We then started the climb out of town  which was long but gradual.

The arrival at Civita di Bagnoregio is even more spectacular than Pitigliano. The town, which has existed  for approximately 3000 years, is situated on the top of a tufa rock outcropping

Civita is also known as the “Dying Town”as over the years parts of the cliffs have fallen off.

When we were here in 2006 there was one B&B with three rooms. Now the town is in the middle of a restoration boom which has included a great amount of cliff stabalization and facitily upgrades.  We stayed at Civita di Bagnoregio B&B in a building that was constructed in the 1400s. Our bedroom is the window on the right on the top floor. Dinner and breakfast were served on the second floor.

we headed back to Viterbo where we rented a car and drove east to Pescarra and then south to Foggia.

Italy 2009 – Viterbo to Pitigliano

// September 23rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Two wheel travels

We have returned to Italy for a cycling trip south from Rome. In 2006 we cycled north of Rome through Tuscany, and north to the Cinque Terra. We discovered many amazing Italian cities but fell in love the small hill towns.  Two in particular stood out, Pitigliano and Civita di Bagnoregio. These two towns are just north of Rome so we decided to visit them again before heading south.

We arrived in Rome after an overnight flight from Vancouver via Montreal. We unpacked and assembled the bikes then spent three days walking and cycling Rome.  We then hopped a train north to Viterbo and cycled to Pitigliano.

We rode from Viterbo to Valantano where we had lunch then on to Latera where the climb ends then there is a rolling downhill to Pitigliano where we spent two nights. As you come around the last corner  towards  Pitigliano you get an breath-taking  view of this walled, hilltop town. Hotel Gaustini, where we spent two nights, is situated overlooking the valley. Our bedroom was the third window down in the pillar that is just to my rightdscn709100011

When they turn the lights on at night you have an even more spetacular display of the walls of Pitigliano.
